ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy swimming teams have qualified a program-record 24 Mids for the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which begin this week at the CHI Health Center Omaha in Omaha, Neb.

The format for the 2021 meet has been altered from past years due to COVID-19 safety concerns.  Instead of a single eight-day meet that mirrors the schedule during the Olympic Games, this year’s event has been divided into two meets.  What is being called Wave I will be held June 4-7 and consist of qualifiers who were seeded 42nd and below in an event as of January 2021.  Those swimmers whose times were seeded 41st and above at that date, or who met or surpassed that time after it was established, are entered into what has been termed Wave II.  Swimmers who qualified for events in both waves will only compete in the June 13-20 Wave II.

Entrants will compete in preliminary heats in the morning to determine the top-16 swimmers in all but the 800 and 1500 freestyle events.  The fastest 16 swimmers in the morning trial heats will advance to the finals that night.  The two distance events will consist of just a timed final without preliminary heats.  The first and second-place swimmers in each Wave I event final will advance to the Wave II meet.  The 2021 U.S. Olympic Team will consist of the fastest swimmers during the Wave II meet.

Of Navy’s 24 qualifiers, all but 2019 graduate Lauren Barber will travel to Omaha and compete at the trials.  Multiple-event Wave I qualifiers are rising sophomore Garrett McGovern (Nashville, Tenn.), 800 and 1500 free; rising junior Jackson Schultz (Millersville, Md.), 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 individual medley and 2021 graduate Luke Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.), 800 free, 1500 free.  Chris Bondarowicz (Scotch Plains, N.J.), a member of the Class of 2021, and rising seniors Sydney Harrington (Fairfax, Va.) and Ethan Tack (Dix Hills, N.Y.) have qualified for events during Wave II.  Bondarowicz will compete in the 100 and 200 breast events, Harrington is entered into the 100 fly and 50 free and Tack will swim the 200 individual medley.

Johnson is the top seed in Wave I’s 800 freestyle, as is rising sophomore Matt Murphy (Mullica Hill, N.J.) in the 200 breaststroke, 2021 graduate Billy Cadigan (Lutherville, Md.) is seeded second in the 200 backstroke and his classmate, Jack Dunworth (Austin, Texas), is the third seed in the 400 freestyle.  Additional Mids are seeded fourth in two events, sixth in two events and seventh in one event during the opening meet.

Navy previously qualified 13 Mids in 16 events for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and had 18 Mids qualify in 22 events for the 2012 trials.

In addition to the 24 swimmers, 2020 graduate Bradley Buchter qualified for the June 6-13 U.S. Olympic Diving Team Trials in the three-meter springboard event.  Like Barber, he will not be competing at the meet.

The preliminary heats during Wave I will be streamed through USASwimming.org, with The Olympic Channel televising each night of finals.  NBC and NBCSN are the networks televising Wave II.  The broadcasts will consist of tape-delayed coverage of the prelims followed by live coverage of the finals.  NBCOlympics.com will stream Wave II prelims and finals.  Live results from both Wave I and II can be found at USASwimming.org.
