As Memorial Day approaches, I find myself reflecting deeply on what this day means to me. It’s a time to honor and remember those who have sacrificed their lives in service to our country. For many, it’s also a day to gather with family and friends, enjoying the freedoms that have been safeguarded by these brave individuals.

For me, Memorial Day is more than just a long weekend or the unofficial start of summer. It’s a poignant reminder of the values and freedoms we often take for granted. The day serves as a moment to pause and express gratitude for those who have paid the ultimate price to protect our way of life.

Growing up, Memorial Day was often marked by pool parties and barbecues. It was a fun day with family and friends, but it wasn’t until I was older that I truly began to understand the significance of what the day represents. Over time, I developed a deep respect for our military and an appreciation for the sacrifices made by countless individuals and their families including my own family and many close friends. As I reflect on this day now, I am filled with admiration for their courage and selflessness.

As a member of the 9/11 generation, my perspective is shaped by the events that followed that tragic day. Like myself, many from my generation answered the call to serve in the aftermath of 9/11, and Memorial Day is a time to remember those who were lost during that period and continue to be lost as a result of PTSD and other mental health challenges. It is our duty to honor their legacy.

I am honored to co-lead the veterans Employee Resource Group at work with Timothy Armstrong, a role that allows me to actively support and advocate for those who have served. Our group is not just a community; it is a family where we remember and honor the brothers and sisters we have lost. Through shared stories and mutual support, we strive to keep their memory alive and to ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.

In an effort to give back, I proudly support Carry The Load a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds for veterans, first responders, and their families. Participating in their initiatives is a meaningful way to contribute to a cause that resonates deeply with all of us. It allows us to honor the fallen while supporting those who continue to serve, ensuring they receive the recognition and assistance they deserve. I have had the honor to attend several Carry The Load events in Dallas, Texas. The image at the top of this article is from the 2023 event – I attended with my father, children, and a few veteran colleagues.

In my own life, Memorial Day has become a time for introspection and connection. It’s an opportunity to not only remember the fallen but also to support and acknowledge those who continue to serve. Whether it’s volunteering for veterans’ organizations or simply reaching out to thank a service member, I try to make this day meaningful in my own way.

I encourage everyone to take a moment this Memorial Day to reflect on what freedom means to you. How will you honor those who have fought to preserve it? Whether through personal reflection, community service, or sharing stories of bravery and sacrifice, we all have a role to play in keeping the memory alive of those that died -let’s remember the true meaning of Memorial Day and carry its spirit with us throughout the year.
