From the Class President: Sean Coffey Confirmed as Navy General Counsel

Classmates,

Please join me in congratulating Sean Coffey (13 CO) on his new position as General Counsel of the Department of the Navy.  Sean was nominated on August 9, 2021, and the Senate confirmed his nomination on a bipartisan vote of 79-17 earlier today, February 9, 2022.  Sean expects to report for duty sometime next week.

Sean will be leading the second-largest civilian law department in the federal government. While the Department of Justice is the largest, the Department of the Navy Office of the General Counsel (OGC) has more than 800 civilian lawyers in 140 offices. The General Counsel also maintains a close working relationship with the Judge Advocate General of the Navy, the senior uniformed lawyer in the Department of the Navy who performs statutory duties under the Uniform Code of Military Justice; helps to oversee the Naval Criminal Investigative Service; and, advises senior Navy and Marine Corps officials on litigation, acquisition, contractual, fiscal, environmental, property, personnel, legislative, ethics, and intelligence law issues.

Best wishes, Sean!

Fair winds,

Glen
