They had never met before the trip, but their shared connection to the Naval Academy and Navy quickly brought them together. During the Alumni Association-sponsored The Invasion of Normandy and Liberation of France tour, managed by the National WWII Museum, alumni traveled through France following in the footsteps of Easy Company, 101st Airborne and the Band of Brothers. On 23 September, Anthony Cacciatore (ROTC Wisconsin ’82), Joe Cacciatore ’18, Paul Borer ’70, Dave Landess ’84, David Harwood (ROTC Michigan ’68), Jim Messenger ’79 and John Curtis ’78 (10th Co.) participated in a wreath laying at the Normandy American Cemetery’s Monument to the Missing. Representing different generations and experiences, the group found common ground in their naval careers and connections to the Academy, sharing stories as they explored the history of World War II. Their experience captured something at the heart of Alumni Travel: the opportunity to see the world alongside fellow alumni and discover that the Naval Academy bond extends far beyond Annapolis.
