On our Class website and in some previous correspondence, we listed the date for the 2028 Commitment Reception and Signing Ceremony (aka “2 for 7”) as August 14, 2026. We are just receiving some more information that permits us to now solicit more ’78 attendees.
The Academy has been revising many of the Link in the Chain events and the Commitment is no different. The day’s events devolved over the years from formal dinners and lectures to now just holding an evening reception in Dahlgren Hall. It will be from 7-8:30 pm (1900-2030) on Friday, 14 Aug. We are limited to 50 people to attend the Reception.
That day the Class of 2028 will be doing several waves of commitment signing by Batts/Company in Memorial Hall. The Class of ’78 are welcome to also attend the signing ceremonies throughout the day.
A Scheme of Maneuver (SOM) document for the day is still in review and awaiting signature and release. When signed, we hope to get a copy and provide you with details on the times and order of the signing ceremonies. That would enable some of you to observe your old company in their signing ceremony. As soon as we find out, we’ll spread the word.
Signup. If you are interested in attending the reception and/or possibly the signing ceremonies, please send an email to Vince Balderrama (v19b78@yahoo.com) and cc Bob Novak (BNovak3478@gmail.com) to tell us which you care to attend. Please also provide your rank at retirement, service and company you were in 1/C year. If you have any questions, feel free to call Vince at 315-708-9214.
What the “2 for 7” Signing is. Unlike in our days, when we awakened on the first day of class 2/C year and acquiesced to now being “Committed,” the “2 for 7” is a conscious, decision and action to make the commitment. The Naval Academy has explained the “2 for 7 signing” as, “…a pivotal milestone in the journey of second class midshipmen, signifying their formal commitment to completing the final two years at the Naval Academy and dedicating a minimum of five years of service to the United States Navy or Marine Corps. This moment serves as a powerful reminder of the responsibility, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment required to become a commissioned officer in the world’s greatest naval service.”
