1983 – In response to attacks by Syrian antiaircraft batteries and surface-to-air missiles against U.S. aircraft the previous day, a 28 aircraft strike group from the carriers Independence (CV-62) and John F. Kennedy (CV-67) attacks Syrian positions in the mountains east of Beirut, Lebanon. An A-6 Intruder of Attack Squadron (VA) 85 is hit by enemy fire. The pilot, Lieutenant Mark A. Lange ’79, USN, is mortally wounded and bombardier-navigator Lieutenant Robert O. Goodman ’78, USN is taken prisoner after their aircraft crashes. The A-7 Corsair II flown by Commander Edward K.
