American Athletic Conference Releases 2020 Navy Football Schedule

Schedule

2/18/2020 2:02:00 PM

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—The 2020 Navy football schedule released today by the American Athletic Conference features five games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, including a date with defending AAC Champion Memphis, the annual Navy-Notre Dame game in Dublin, Ireland and America’s Game, the annual Army-Navy Game presented by USAA, which will be played at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

The Mids, coming off a school-record tying 11 wins and winners of the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy and the Liberty Bowl, will open up the 2020 campaign on Aug. 29 in Dublin, Ireland in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic at spectacular Aviva Stadium.  Kickoff is set for 2:00 PM (ET), 7:00 PM in Dublin and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.  It will mark the first ESPN broadcast under the American Athletic Conference’s new television contract with the network.  It was previously announced that ESPN’s College GameDay will broadcast live from Dublin, which will be the first time the show has been held outside of the United States since it started going to game sites in 1993. The Irish finished 11-2 last year, including a 33-9 victory over Iowa State in the Camping World Bowl.

After returning from Ireland, the Mids will get a week off before Lafayette comes to town on Sept. 12 for the home opener.  Lafayette finished 4-8 in 2019, but won four of its final five contests.

Navy will travel to the Big Easy the following week (Sept. 19) to take on Tulane in what has become an exciting rivalry between the two schools.  The last four Navy-Tulane games have been decided by a total of 13 points, while the last three games have been decided by a total of six points.  Last year, Bijan Nichols kicked a 48-yard field goal at the gun to beat the Green Wave, 41-38, in Annapolis.  Tulane finished the 2019 season 7-6, including a 30-13 victory over Southern Miss in the Armed Forces Bowl.

After a two-year hiatus, Temple returns to the schedule and will travel to Annapolis on Sept. 26.  The Owls have given the Mids trouble of late, winning three straight and four of the last five against the Mids.  Temple finished 8-5 last year, which included a loss to North Carolina in the Military Bowl at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

The Mids will travel to Colorado Springs on Oct. 3 to take on the Air Force Falcons in the first leg in the race for the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy.  Navy has won the trophy in 11 of the last 17 years, including last year with victories over the Falcons (34-25) and Army West Point (31-7). Air Force finished 11-2 last year, including a 31-21 victory over Washington State in the Cheez-It Bowl.

After an off-week, the Mids will be on the road again, this time to Greenville, N.C. to take on the East Carolina Pirates on Saturday, Oct. 17.  East Carolina finished 4-8 last year, including a 42-10 loss to Navy, but showed great improvement down the stretch losing close games to UCF (13 points), Cincinnati (three points) and SMU (eight points).

Dana Holgorsen and the Houston Cougars will come to Annapolis on Oct. 24 for Homecoming.  The Mids will see a much different team than the one they beat, 56-41, last year as the Cougars had more than 25 players redshirt including transfers from Minnesota, Colorado, TCU, Troy and Oklahoma.

The Mids will travel to Dallas on Halloween to take on the SMU Mustangs. Navy defeated SMU, 35-28, last year in Annapolis.  SMU finished 10-3 a year ago.

Navy returns home for two-straight home games taking on Tulsa on Nov. 7 and Memphis on Nov. 14.

Tulsa might have been the best 4-8 team in the country last year losing to SMU in triple overtime, Cincinnati by 11, Memphis by one and Tulane by 12.

Memphis finished 12-2 a year ago, including a 35-23 win over Navy, and lost a hard-fought game to Penn State in the Cotton Bowl.  The Tigers will come to Annapolis with a new head coach as Ryan Silverfield replaced Mike Norvell after the latter took the Florida State job following the AAC Championship Game.

The Mids will travel to the welcomed warmth of Tampa, Fla. on Nov. 21 to take on the USF Bulls and first-year head coach Jeff Scott.

The Mids will be off Thanksgiving Weekend for the first time since 2013.

The American Athletic Conference Championship Game will be played on Saturday, Dec. 5 and will match the top two teams (no divisions this year with the departure of UConn) in the American Athletic Conference with the regular-season champion serving as the host team.

Navy’s final regular-season game will be played on Saturday, Dec. 12 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia in the 121st playing of the Army-Navy Game presented by USAA.  The game will be televised nationally by CBS.
