USNA Summer Update

Posted byamartinez August 2, 2019March 23, 2020

Campaign Email Header

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Annapolis!

We wanted to share a brief update on the Naval Academy and Foundation as it’s been a busy and productive summer for the 4,400-member Brigade of Midshipmen, Naval Academy leadership, faculty and staff.

Some highlights of Summer 2019 include:

  • The Class of 2023 is nearing the end of the seven-week challenge of Plebe Summer.
  • Midshipmen are completing Language, Regional Expertise and Culture travel experiences in locations including Israel, Ukraine and Europe, as well assummer training opportunities.
  • Faculty are continuing their critical original research, including some projects pursued with midshipman participants.

Last week, VADM Sean Buck ’83, USN, became the 63rd Superintendent of the Naval Academy in a Change of Command ceremony available to view here. We welcome VADM Buck and look forward to working with him in the years to come, and we are grateful to his predecessor, VADM Walter “Ted” Carter ’81, USN, for his tremendous leadership and partnership with the Alumni Association and Foundation over the last five years.

The Foundation is also pleased to share that Fiscal Year 2018-19 has been among the strongest years in the Foundation’s history, and we sincerely value the Naval Academy’s alumni, parents and friends whose support and partnership affords the Naval Academy and our greater community “Margin of Excellence” resources. In Fiscal Year 2018-19, the impact of philanthropy included:

• The Naval Academy’s Cyber Operations program became one of only four programs in the United States to receive ABET accreditation in cybersecurity. Learn more about the impact of philanthropy on the Naval Academy’s overall Cyber program here.

• A record number of 1,027 midshipmen participated in Experiential Leadership Development opportunities, such as the Class of 1977 Gettysburg Leadership Encounter and the Offshore Sailing Training Squadron (OSTS).

• The International Programs Office facilitated 300 midshipman immersive experiences via private gift funds, including 69 midshipmen participating in semester-long programs in Argentina, Chile, China, Germany, Ghana, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Latvia, Morocco, Portugal, Qatar, Singapore and Spain.

Thank you for your continued leadership, generosity and advocacy. Best wishes for a peaceful and relaxing end of summer, and we look forward to seeing you in the fall.

Go Navy!
