40th Reunion is still on!

Classmates,

We have had a few inquiries about whether or not the Reunion will be canceled due to Hurricane Flo.  I spoke with Navy’s Athletic Director, Chet Gladchuk, this morning, and he said he had no intentions of canceling the game.  Cancellation would only occur if the City of Annapolis was shutdown which at this time does not look likely.  Vince also spoke with the Superintendent’s Chief of Staff and as of this morning only the Friday Parade has been canceled.  The Yard is operating and planning to be open.  Depending on any flooding in the Yard and Annapolis, entry at Gates 1 (Main Gate) and Gate 8 (“back gate”) may be limited or prohibited but Gate 3 (by the Chapel) would be open to accommodate traffic.  Current forecast for Annapolis shows we will experience rain and winds of about 15-20 knots.  Your Reunion Committee will continue to monitor the situation and adjust as we can; however, we expect to conduct the reunio n as planned.   Fortunately, almost all our event venues are indoors or sheltered.

We recognize that some of you may be negatively impacted and unable to make the trip due to flight cancellations or other more serious issues.  If that happens we will do our very best to be fair to all involved when considering refunds; however, we must still meet our contractual agreements and according to our current policy we may not be able to refund the registration fee. We won’t be able to fully understand the situation until after the reunion and all the various scenarios play out, but we will do our best to be fair to all and make refunds to those of you that are severely impacted due to Hurricane Flo.

We hope you all continue to plan to join us in Annapolis.  When you do, amend the uniform of the day to “carry rain gear” (...and, yes, wear it without further direction!).  We wish safe travel to all and safekeeping for those of you in the hurricane’s direct path.

Please refer to our class website for further updates at www.usna1978.org.  See you soon.

Fair winds…

Reunion Update - 40th Reunion Class Gift

Classmates,

This is an update from our Class VP Sean Coffey, who is our POC on the Class Project for the 40th:

"Five years ago we set an ambitious goal to raise $1.5 million for our 40th Class Gift across four areas:  The Center for Ethical Leadership (led by our own Art Athens); Admissions (led by our own Bruce Latta); Athletic Excellence (because who doesn't love Navy sports); and the Naval Academy ("Supe's") Fund (because four decades later we still sweat the three-star).  The contributions continue to roll in and we expect to have a very positive announcement at the Class Meeting next month.  Thanks so much to those who have already contributed.

As of now we have a 43% participation rate for our Class, which is terrific by all standards save one -- '78 standards!  We really want to get that number well over the halfway mark, so if you haven't stepped up yet please consider doing so, regardless of amount.  All things being equal, we encourage you to pledge your contributions in part to Admissions (Bruce says thank you), to CEL (Art, who is retiring at year end, says thank you), and to Athletic Excellence (the area where we need some help).

Note that Art and Bruce will make short presentations at our meeting to thank us for our assistance to their important work, as will the Naval Academy Foundation CEO (our own Byron Marchant).

Thanks in advance for whatever you can do to help the Class Project.  See many of you in a few weeks.  Go hard, '78!

Your Classmate,

Sean"

We will present our Class Gift to Byron and the Foundation at our Class Meeting.  Hope to see you all there.

Class of '78 Reunion, Website & Voting Update

Classmates,

I have a few quick updates for you on the reunion, our class website and class officer voting.

Reunion

  1. We have 426 classmates and several of our classmates' widows registered for the reunion and over 800 folks coming to the Tailgate on Saturday. We will send you another email closer to the reunion with some final details.
  2. Registration will remain open through the reunion weekend for those needing to make last minute decisions. If you register online go to www.usna.com, login, and navigate to our class webpage. From there, click on “Events” and follow instructions on how to register.  If you have problems, drop me a note and I will guide you through the process. Come on! Join us!
  3. Football tickets in our class section are almost sold out. (Remember: You must have a game ticket to get into the tailgate) The ticket office will hold the remaining tickets for us until next Monday. So, if you want tickets in our class section order them now by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY and tell them you want tickets in the Class of ’78 section.
  4. There will be a pickup basketball game starting around 1015 on Saturday morning. For those who want to play, the specific location will be available at check-in. (Vince, your wife called me and said you can't play)
  5. The general “uniform of the day” for reunion events is “appropriate casual” as opposed to “business casual” — in other words, sport coats & ties may be worn if you really want to, but they are not required or expected for any event.  We just ask you to please dress appropriately for the nature of the event, Friday Night get together at the Westin, Memorial Service in the Chapel, Football game, etc.
  6. Don’t forget your ID’s to get onto the Yard. I know I shouldn’t have to say this, but it has happened. As a reminder, access to the Academy grounds is limited.  Anyone with a locally prepared USNA ID Card or a DOD credential, including military retirees and dependents, may drive onto USNA. All others will need to park outside the Academy and walk in through Gate 1. All visitors 21 years of age or older must have a valid picture ID.  Please refer to www.usna.edu and click on “Visit” for additional details.

Official Class of 1978 website – www.usna1978.org

If you have not updated your webpage on our official Class Website, we request you please do. So far only 202 classmates and widows have updated profiles on our new website.  Our Class Historian, Luke Ridenhour, is busy collecting data on our class to produce a robust record of who we are.  We are missing important data such as who served in what warfare specialty, how many remained on active duty for a career, how many years you served, or highest rank attained and would like to gather as much as we can to tell our story. Go to our website, www.usna1978.org, login, update your info and read Luke’s work so far.  I know you will enjoy the story about our class he has unfolded.  If you need login info, contact our Matt Elias at webmaster@usna1978.org.

Voting for Class Officers

We are over half-way through the voting period for Class Officers.  Request all go to our class website www.usna1978.org , click on the link in the “Latest Updates” column on the far left of the home webpage, and vote. Thanks.

Gouge to Prepare for our 40th - email #1

Classmates,

There are only seven weeks until our 40th Reunion in September.  During this time I intend to send you several emails to prepare you for your visit.  If you have not been to the Yard in the past few years, you are going to find several new buildings I hope you will check out. There is a lot to be excited about, but I am especially excited to tell you about the first project below, our new Alumni Association and Foundation Center.  Read more to find out the details…

  1. U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation Center
  • Although you can’t see visible construction of our new Alumni Association and Foundation Center, the project is well underway to start construction around the middle of CY2019 and be completed by the middle of CY2021. This facility is badly needed to replace the five current outdated and fragmented facilities located in Annapolis.
  • The National Defense Authorization Act of 2018 authorized the Secretary of the Navy to enter into a renewable 50-year lease with the Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation (AAF) for a 3-acre plot of land on King George Street. This plot of land is across the street from the baseball field and along College Creek and is where the mail center and hazardous material handling centers are currently located. Those buildings will be demolished and those services will be moved across the Severn to the annex.
  • The total cost of this project is budgeted at $20 million. Fortunately, Mr. Fred Fluegel, Class of ’61 has pledged $10,000,000 towards our new AAF Center.
  • Please see the attached photos for more details.
  1. Rickets Hall Physical Mission Center (PMC)
  1. Rear Admiral Grace Hopper Hall – Center for Cyber Security Studies
  1. USNA Parking Garage
  • Parking in the Yard has always been in short supply. So, with the new Cyber Security Studies (CSS) building being built on the site of the parking lot between Nimitz Library and Rickover Hall, additional parking had to be completed before CCS construction could begin.
  • The new parking garage has been completed and is located across from Alumni Hall next to Worden Field. Check it out when you attend the parade on Friday of our reunion. BTW, please note that only DOD ID card holders can drive onto the Yard. Our reunion commiittee will provide buses as usual to shuttle us between the hotel and the Yard. Please check out Yard access requirements at https://www.usna.edu/Visit/index.php

Until my next email…

Class Store Early Bird Extended

Classmates,

The early bird campaign for our Class of 1978 Store is being extended to June 19. The purpose of the early bird campaign is to make merchandise available now so you can wear the Class of '78 apparel during the summer months, rather than having to wait until the reunion to receive your purchases. Any orders made by June 19th will be shipped the week of July 23rd directly to your home.

Also, any orders placed through August 5, 2018, will be delivered before the reunion. Orders to the store after August 5, 2018, cannot be guaranteed delivery before the reunion.  Finally, the store will remain open several months after the reunion for additional purchases, but classmates are urged to go to the site now and make your purchases sooner rather than later. Click on the attached link or cut and paste it into your browser to make your purchases from the Class of 1978 Store:

40th Reunion Registration is now open!

Classmates,

Sorry for the delay on launching the 40th Reunion website, but we are now live.  We request that you register for the Reunion by 15 July 2018 so that we can get an accurate headcount for the various events.  Please follow the instructions below to register:

  1. Go to the USNA Alumni Association website at www.usna.com. Once there, click on “SIGN IN” (top right corner of title bar) and log in with your user name and password.  If you do not have an account in the Online Community, then please follow the prompts for “New user registration” on the sign in page to set one up.   If you are not sure you have an account, then contact onlinecommunity@usna.com  and they will be happy to check for you!  PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SET UP A SECOND ACCOUNT by filling out the New User Form, it will not work.

If you have an account but do not remember your password and have the same email address as when the account was set up, click on “Forgotten Password.

If your email address has changed, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SET UP ANOTHER ACCOUNT by filling out the New User Form, it will not work.   Instead, please email onlinecommunity@usna.com  for user name and password look up.

  1. Once you are logged in, highlight (place your cursor over) the “Stayed Connected” tab on the title bar (far left tab) and click on the “Find My Class” link from the drop down menu. Select our class year from the drop down menu and hit GO.  Once on our class page, click on the EVENTS tab, and you will see the link to the registration.  When you click on the registration link, if you have not logged into the usna.com website you will be prompted to do so.
  2. The first page of registration provides detailed reunion information of each event with reunion committee POCs if you have questions. Finally, at the bottom of the page is the link to the actual registration.  You will be asked to verify your contact information in Step 1.  Step two is where you determine which events to attend and how many folks you are bringing.  Step 3 asks for name tag information.  And at last, Step 4 asks for your credit card information.

Please note that you may bring as many guests as you want; however, each guest needs to be registered for each event with a paid ticket, and if they are coming to the tailgate you will need to get each guest a football game ticket since we are using the banquet room inside the stadium.

Final note:  You can add to your registration numbers at a later date if needed, but all refunds or removal of people from the list need to go through the Reunion Committee, either Brett Ayotte or John Cooke.

Looking forward to seeing you all in September!

How to Order Football Game Tickets for Class of 1978 40th Reunion:

Navy vs. Lehigh University

Game time: Saturday September 15th at 3:30PM

Our tailgate party is going to be in the N-Star facility inside the Stadium and we can assure you it will be as fantastic an event as it always has been!  Keep in mind you MUST have a game ticket to get into the stadium and get access to the banquet facility.  Please note:  Game tickets are NOT a part of the reunion registration package.  They must be purchased separately through NAAA. If you already have tickets (e.g., season tickets, tickets from a friend, etc.) you are good to go. Otherwise read below.

We have arranged for a block of tickets on the Navy side of the field. You have Two Options.

Option one: For $45 per ticket you can reserve a seat in Section 1 which is along the Navy sideline on the far end away from the N-Star room.

Option Two: If you want standing room only (SRO) you can purchase SRO tickets to the game for $30 each. These seats are on The Hill in the “Bowl area” where the grass is below the permanent seats.  You may also purchase Youth SRO tickets for children ages 3 thru 12 for $20.  Children under age 3 are free. Be advised for the purchase of youth tickets that younger children who should be accompanied by adults – need to be accompanied by adults. No 6 year-olds running around on their own please.

So here’s how you order tickets through NAAA for our reunion:

  1. Go to: https://tinyurl.com/navypromo
  2. Once on the page fill in the Promo Code: 1978.
  3. Select Find Tickets
  4. You will then have the option of picking your own reserved seats and desired location. Using the Reserve seating option will allow you to purchase as many tickets as you want. Understand that when entering a quantity, you get “capped” at 12 only because that is how many seats are in each row. You can order more than 12. Tickets are $45.00 per seat.
  5. If you want to order SRO tickets simply click on that and you will be given two choices: $30 seats for adults and $20 seats for youth ages 3-12.
  6. PLEASE NOTE: If you use a mobile device, your seats will be auto assigned as NAAA software doesn't allow seat selection on mobile devices.
  7. Also note for ALL ticket purchases there is a $2.50 handling fee per ticket and an $8.00 administrative fee for your entire order. These are standard NAAA electronic ticket order fees.
  8. If you have trouble online please call 1-800-US4-NAVY and tell them you are trying to purchase tickets in the class of 1978 reunion section – Reserved seating for Section 1 or SRO for the Lehigh game.

40th Reunion Update #1

Classmates,

Please read the attached update on our 40th Reunion provided by Brett Ayotte and our Reunion committee.  Some details are still being finalized, but the committee wants to give you some good information to make your travel plans.

See you in September!

Fair winds...

Glen

Glen Woods

President, USNA Class of 1978

Classmates,

Hopefully, by now you’ve seen a couple of blasts from Glen Woods, Class President, and/or from your Company Representative about the upcoming 40th Reunion.  The basic details about the Reunion are:

  • Dates: 13-15 September 2018
  • Where: Annapolis, MD
  • Reunion Headquarters: Westin Hotel
  • Football: Navy vs. Lehigh (it’s the home opener for the 2018 season)

However, we are sure that you’re interested in some details about the events that are being planned to fill the time.  The Reunion Planning Committee has been meeting regularly since last September putting together a number of activities that offer time to have fun, to get together as a Class, and for smaller groups to spend time together. The committee is currently working with the vendors searching for ways to lower costs and will provide you that information as soon as we’ve locked it in.   A common comment from past reunions is a desire to have more opportunities to gather and just spend some time with Classmates.  We’ve added a couple of new events to address that desire to include a Thursday evening Welcome Reception and a Sunday Brunch.  Keep these options in mind as you make your travel plans.  Note - other than the registration fee (one per classmate), every other event will be priced ala carte.  Some of the key events are:

  • Golf Tournament: Based on feedback from past reunions, we have moved the Class of 1978 Golf Tournament back to Thursday afternoon to allow Classmates the opportunity to participate in the Memorial Service on Friday. The tournament will be held at the Renditions Golf Course in Davidsonville, MD.  Renditions is a course where each of the holes is based on a classic hole from famous golf courses, so if you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to play Augusta’s “Amen Corner”, this might be your chance.  The tournament will start at noon, with a quick lunch.  There will be drinks on the course and prizes.  Bus transportation will be provided from the Westin.
  • Gathering Reception: We have heard from many that they would like to have more time to just “hang out and chat” with Classmates.  So we’ve added this new event.  For those who arrive on or before Thursday, we’ve arranged to have an informal reception with light hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine, and soft drinks.  It’s a great place to meet up with Classmates, then head out for dinner.  It’s also a perfect opportunity to catch up or catch a late snack if you’re just arriving.  We’ll have a place to check-in for the weekend and get all the gouge.  Bus transportation will be provided from the Westin.  We’re in the process of narrowing down the specific location, but we can assure you it will be fun.
  • Memorial Service: The Memorial Service will be held in the USNA Chapel on Friday at 1100.  At this service, we will remember all of our Classmates who are no longer with us.  Bus transportation will be provided to the Yard.
  • Friday Social: On Friday evening, there will be an event at the Westin. The Reunion Committee is still working on the details, but to give a hint – there will be music, a magician, a photobooth, USNA and Class trivia, food and drink, and lots of opportunities to connect with friends, old and new.  It will also be a time to show your Navy Spirit.
  • Prayer Breakfast: We will again be holding a Prayer Breakfast on Saturday morning from 0830 to 0930 at the Westin.  Two members of the Class of ’78 have agreed to be the speakers at this event, which will include a continental breakfast.  The event will end in time for interested classmates to attend the Class Meeting in the hotel.
  • Tailgater: As we have done in the past, we are going to use the N-Star room at the stadium as the focal point for our tailgater.  The food will be as spectacular as it has in the past, with a raw bar, pit beef, burgers, salads, and an excellent selection of drinks.  Because we’ll be inside the stadium, it’s very easy to move between watching the game live and sitting with friends inside the N-Star room watching the game on closed circuit TV.  NOTE:  A ticket to the game will be required to attend the Tailgater, since it is inside the stadium boundary.
  • Departure Brunch: Another recurring comment we’ve received after past reunions is that it seems pretty abrupt to end with the Tailgater. Many people would like an opportunity to get together informally and say goodbye on Sunday.  To accommodate that, we’ve added a brunch to the schedule that provides a nice window on Sunday morning to get together, grab a bite to eat before leaving Annapolis, and a time to close out with your friends.  The timing of the brunch will allow people to eat before attending a church service in the Yard, or go to a service and then eat afterwards.   If your schedule dictates, you can bring your bags and depart from there. The specific location is being finalized, but it will provide lots of space for meeting up.

Some other information to help with planning your Reunion Weekend:

  • Registration: On line registration for Reunion events will be available in late May 2018. Registration will be handled through the Alumni Association website, so everyone will need to either update their information or establish an account on the NAAA webpage.  We will be providing links to the registration site from the Class Webpage (usna1978.org) and the Class Facebook page.  When you register, the only mandatory cost is the registration fee, which is applies only to the Classmate (i.e., you only pay one registration fee).  That fee will cover all the administrative and transportation costs associated with the weekend.  All of the other events will be either free (e.g., Memorial Service, Class meeting, etc.) or will be available on an ala carte basis – you only pay if you want to go.
  • Lodging: The headquarters for the Reunion will be the Westin Hotel on West Street, within walking distance to the stadium and a short ride on the Annapolis circulator bus to downtown.  Currently, the block of rooms that we reserved are full, but Westin is putting people on a waiting list as rooms open up as people’s plans change.  The reunion committee is currently researching other hotels for overflow.  That said, there is a wide range of hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, AirBnB, and other lodging available in the Annapolis area.  Information on hotels will be promulgated shortly, when more is known.
  • Game Tickets: For those who are not currently season ticket holders, we are arranging to have a group of tickets set aside for the Class, so that we can sit together.   Information on how to order tickets in the Class seating area will be forthcoming.  Additionally, you will have an option to purchase a “standing room” ticket, which will not guarantee a seat, but will allow you to get into the stadium for the Tailgater.
  • Visiting the Yard: As in the past, we will be providing transportation from the Westin to the Yard.  To gain access to the Yard, you will need a picture ID (e.g., driver’s license).  Unless you have a DoD issued ID, such as a retired ID card, you will not be able to drive onto the Yard.  However, with all the construction that is currently going on, parking will be extremely difficult, so taking the bus in is the best option.  The Midshipmen’s Store will be open and available to all reunion attendees.  If you haven’t been there in a while, you will be amazed.
  • Class Store: As we have done for past reunions, we will be establishing a Class Store hosted by Anchor Enterprises.  For those looking for apparel with a Class Crest, this will be the place to go and place an order.  We have an agreement with Anchor where the Class receives a small royalty of items ordered through the Class Store.  Information about the Class Store will be provided as soon as it is up and running.  Keep your eyes open for information.
  • Other Stuff: The Committee has received a couple of ideas for things that would be fun to do. One of those ideas was to have a car show with “Mid-mobiles” that are still owned by the original owner.  While the logistics of something like that at the Westin, as well as for those who don’t live in the area, is problematic, the Committee thinks that having a “virtual” car show through photographs would be enjoyable.  So, if you still own your original Midshipman car, please send/email a photo of it “from the day” and as it is currently to Vince Balderrama and we’ll put together an appropriate display.  Along the same lines, we are looking for photographs that span the time from Midshipman Days to the present to be put into a slide show that we can run at the Friday Social and at the Tailgater.  Again, send/email your pictures to Vince.

We are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the 40th Reunion.  If you have any questions, please contact your Company Representative.

40th Reunion Warning Order

Classmates,

This is your Warning Order for our 40th  Class Reunion.  We are scheduled for the long weekend of Thursday, September 13, 2018, through Sunday, September 16, 2018, with our headquarters set at the Annapolis Westin Hotel on West Street.  The Westin has established a personalized web site for our 40th Reunion, and you can access the site to book, modify, or cancel a reservation from August 15, 2017 to September 18, 2018.  The rate is $279 per night, plus taxes, with a two night minimum required for the rate. They'll charge the first night for a deposit at time of booking and the reservation can be cancelled until 30 days in advance of arrival for a full refund. Below is the link to our Westin Hotel web page to make reservations:

Planning is still in its early phases and our reunion committee will pass the word when they have an update.  We do know that we have the banquet room for the tailgate and likely will have a function at the Westin on Friday night.  Other activities such as golf, p-rade, memorial service, class meeting, and chapel services will be announced at a later date.

Here is an alert – there currently is no football game scheduled on Saturday, September 15.  The game originally scheduled was moved to late August.  Most of the other reunions have moved to that date, but we felt that date would be hot and would interfere with many folks’ end-of-summer plans.  We have requested NAAA work with the AAC to move a game into the September 15 slot, preferably at home, but an away game would allow us to watch on big screens in the banquet room and maybe on the stadium screens outside. Since Navy is playing Hawaii in the Aloha state on September 1, we hope NAAA will strive for a bye-week on September 8 and set up the 15th for a game.  There are no other home games scheduled at this time, so we will work with NAAA to help us pull this off.  The up-side will be an Annapolis with fewer reunions and, therefore, more availability for us.  We likely will not know our fate until the 2018 football schedule is set early next year.

We are working with our Company Reps to pass the word.  If you have not heard from yours lately, reach out to him and update your contact information.  If you don’t know who is your company rep, then go to our class website, www.usna1978.org, find your rep, and then fill out a Form 2 and send it to him!  If you need the password to the our website, use the last name of our ‘Dant all lower case…then fill out another Form 2 and send to your Company Rep!  While on our class website, please ensure your contact information is current there, too.  If you are receiving this email directly then your contact information is current with the Alumni Association; however, if it was forwarded to you then your contact information isn’t current with the Alumni Association and needs to be updated.  Please help your company rep, the class officers and the reunion committee by ensuring your contact info is current in those three places.  Thanks for your help.

Hope to see you ALL at the 40th.

Fair winds…

Glen
